TOUGH

So... remember that mini Heroes renaissance I was having after hearing about [Casting Spoiler]? Remember how I was remembering the good times and talking about The Heroes World Tour and how great the Hawkins/Sanders family was and how much i fucking LOVED the Wonder Twins?

Thanks for reminding me why I GTFO of Heroes, Heroes writers.

I distinctly remember, when Heroes fandom started talking about the problematic aspects of the show, the racism, the sexism, how uneven storylines and deaths were, all of it, we all maintained it was unintentional. Both me and [info]technosage made multiple mentions of how we truly believed Kring and Co. were good people, who had the best of intentions but were just midguided and uncertain about how to do that. We thought they meant well but now I see that that was a lie. That was... they never intended good things for the People of Color on Heroes or the Women on Heroes.

For those who are curious, here's a fucking BREAKDOWN. I only have pre-S4 info (except for the white dude they added as a regular to the cast this season, despite claiming not to have enough time to actually write Sendhil into any episodes)

Scienific PROOF that Heroes has a problem with Race and Gender )

Looking at this icon makes me sad, but I doubt I'll ever get rid of it.

I CAN HAS MY IPOD!!!

I had no hope whatsoever, but because I would hate myself if I didn't, I went to the bar that I was drunkest at on Friday, and asked if they had my iPod. AND THEY DID!!!!!!!!! WUT! This does not happen in real life! :DDDDDD I HAS MY BABY AGAIN! I christened it by listening to It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish at top volume on my way home. I AM SO HAPPYYYYYYY!!!! :D :D :D

My emotional dependence on this little piece of technology is a little ridic. On my walk home, I wanted to listen to music, but COULDN'T, and I almost cried. BUT NOW I HAS MY BABY! Bweeeee.

Today I also spoke to an awesome professor who was here to give a talk from the University of Rochester about my project, and he had some great ideas. Now we're on a completely different tack! Hah! That's what happens when you have NO IDEA about the field you jump into, and then talk to an expert. But we're learning! It's good! I'm excited!

I'm also fucking exhausted. My head is throbbing. I'm gonna do some reading, then SLEEP.

I HAS MY IPOD!!!! :DDDDDDDDD

So, on Twitter I say: someone should write me "Video Phone" fic where Lady Gaga and Beyonce go play laser tag & then Gaga pins Beyonce to a wall & they make-out

And then [info]eternelle attacked me on IM to make me finish.

Chat fic that is exactly what I said I wanted someone ELSE to write me. I think I'm doing it wrong. )

But really, other people should write me fic about Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

Some seriousness before I start my long blather about Doctor Who. I haven't watched Heroes at all this season (or most of last), because it was just boring. Now I'm glad that I have a good reason past "lame" to never watch it again.

Heroes writer on the plight of straight white man in Hollywood: There are programs and incentives to help everyone except white males.

certain projects, films, movies, corporations will actually get money paid back to them if they hire a woman, a minority, hell double jackpot if you hire a female minority… that’s twice the money!!

Buh-bye, Heroes. I haven't seen [info]just_katarin comment on this yet, but possibly it's because she hasn't been able to summon the words. I'm finding it difficult myself.

ETA: Couples' Retreat movie poster photoshops out only two African-Americans for UK release. They were already, like, half the size of the other people on the poster in the first place. Why not just get rid of them altogether?

Onto more entertaining matters, Doctor Who 416: Waters of Mars )

Apparently David Tennant is doing a TV series on my side of the pond for next year. It takes place in Chicago and it's called Rex Is Not My Lawyer. I can't wait to hear his American accent!

And courtesy of my friend Costa, though I'm sure most of you have seen it already: John Barrowman dancing to Single Ladies. I don't know how or WHY this exists, but I'm glad that it does.

I come bearing dance videos:

- Obama Does Thriller. An incredible parody that does what it says on the tin.

- Feng from Quest was on the east coast last week and taught a bunch of classes. Here's his EPIC Motion class to Take a Walk. Most videos from workshops don't show you the actual teaching portion, so this video is extra awesome.

- Another one of his classes, this time for Boogiezone in NJ to When Doves Cry.

- B-Girl movie trailer. For a straight-to-dvd dance movie, they seem to have really nice production values. Also, no stand-ins or doubles in this movie. Everyone is actually a dancer.

- More clothing lines should have promo music videos. Blame the Other Duck with Twitch, Rino, Victor, Lando from Boxcuttuhz and a song of epic earworm proportions by SNRG. If only their website wasn't under construction!

- Neverland at Elements X. Brandon Dumlao's crew performing in Boston this past weekend. They end with Glee's version of Don't Stop Believing and it is appropriately epic. Also there's a chair dance somewhere in the middle there, and who can resist a good chair dance?

- Inglorious Ladies vs Squadron at Claws Out 4. Lady Jules of Beat Freaks, Bgirl Peppa of Syrenz and Jessfx made it to 8th at Claws Out 4 this weekend and were the only all girl crew. They're so great.

Third: Teevee!

AND NOW I WANT TO GO AND THROW OUT EVERYTHING IN MY HOUSE, THANKS.

So, anyone besides me curious as to what actually went down with Michael Runion unfollowing Ryan, Z and Greenwald on twitter? They are now reunited apparently. It took him longer to re-follow Greenwald than Z and Ryan.

...I'm the only person paying attention to that, aren't I? EXCELLENT. Thanks to twitter, I get creepier by the day. I would ask you all to let me know if it really gets out of hand, but I don't think I trust any of you to actually do that.

Today in my intellectual property class I learned that someone, somewhere has a patent for exercising cats with a laser pointer. I just thought that was worth sharing.

Last night I watched Dr. Who: The Waters of Mars )

I also watched last week's SPN after all and I was going to post all about it, but then I just...didn't care that much. It was actually a lot better than I expected it to be, especially given my epic embarrassment squick, but mostly I just wasn't into it. *hands*

I have a lot of work to do. So of course I plan to spend the remainder of the evening either messing with my AO3 account or catching up on television. \o/

Handed over the keys to the old place this morning. I am officially moved. As soon as I'm unpacked I'm going to photograph the shit out of the new place and y'all can appreciate my impressive collection of posters from gigs and second-hand furniture. Audrey took a photo of me through the cracks in the walls at the old place, so you'll see I wasn't kidding or exaggerating about living in a hovel.

Fall Out Boy have been totally fucking adorable yet again and thanked http://www.thefortysixthirtytwo.com/ in the liner notes for their new best-of collection, "Believers Never Die" -- the site is a mosaic image of the band, made up of the 4,632 names of their "believers" (though nobody can work out how the names were picked, as they don't correspond to any particular ordering pattern or sign-up process). My name's one of the ones in the edges of the light. It makes me feel all squishy to see it there.

But! While I'm all happy about that, clearly the important thing is for somebody who's got their preorder early to tell me if there's anything interesting in the Sixteen Candles video commentary -- apparently it's Andy and Joe talking about their facial hair, and Patrick talking about his hats, and Pete being lurky and quiet? Whatever, whatever, I don't care, this is the closest thing I get to new canon in my fandom of one, okay? Gimme.

I'm going into the city this evening to do more recording for future Outland Institute radio segments-- talkin' about the Umbrella Academy today, woo. I intend to say "I LIKE IT AND IT'S GREAT". That cultural studies education sure did make me articulate.

Mass. principal bans students from saying 'Meep!'
AP

DANVERS, Mass. – Who knew "Meep!" was a four-letter word? The utterance favored by bungling lab assistant Beaker of "The Muppet Show" has been banned at Danvers High School in Massachusetts after students said it to repeatedly interrupt school.

Principal Thomas Murray said the word was part of a disruption planned using Facebook.

The Salem News reports that parents recently got an automated call about "Meep!" from Murray. He warned them that students who said or displayed the word at school could be suspended.

Murray says the warning was needed because students didn't heed his "reasonable request" to stop the meeping.

Danvers High sophomore Melanie Crane says it doesn't mean anything in particular.

*****

I have no opinion on the "disruption" or the principal's actions. I just feel the need to note: BEAKER WAS NOT BUNGLING!!! BUNSEN JUST HAD A BAD HABIT OF BLOWING HIM UP. Beaker was a very competent assistant, thank you very much. Very competent and very long-suffering.

My Chemical Romance Trade Theatrics for Raw Rock on Next LP

When My Chemical Romance finally stopped touring behind their 2006 concept album The Black Parade, the band was so drained guitarist Frank Iero feared the worst: "I thought the band was going to break up." But instead of splitting, MCR took a break, then hit a Los Angeles studio with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen producer Brendan O’Brien and spent almost a full year crafting something far from the theatrical pomp of the Parade. As singer Gerard Way tells Rolling Stone in our new issue, he wanted to "harness everything that’s great about this band into shorter songs. Almost protopunk, like the Stooges or the MC5."

Question: What do zombie movies and articles about the continuing "fame" of Heidi & Spencer Pratt have in common?

Answer: the instinctual response of "oh my god.... they can't be stopped. Shoot them! SHOOT THEM IN THE HEAD!"

***********

So anyway, this weekend I saw Leonard Cohen, and that was amazing. Sadly, Fi and I had to leave a little early to catch the train back up to the city. While it would have been awesome to get to stick around for the rest of the second set and encores, we got to hear most of the other songs we really wanted to, and we got to sit there and say "oh my god, that's actually leonard cohen... and he sounds just like himself." Which was really the main reason to go to this show. Plus, due to the placement of a curtain, we got moved from nosebleeds to actually pretty decent seats. And much like I want a Pocket!Tim Gunn to offer me motivating affirmations and self-esteem boosts on a daily basis, I would also very much like a Pocket!Leonard Cohen to introduce me to people, as his band introductions were the best ever. Not that his band didn't deserve awesome introductions. They totally did. They were all phenomenal.

Also... he skipped to and fro on stage a few times, and that was so far beyond endearing it's actually a little hard to wrap my mind around.

Then we crashed out at the apartment for most of Saturday before heading over to Bottom Of The Hill to see Dear and the Headlights with miss [info]frausorge. This... was not the best show of the year. The show had been listed as starting at 9, but the first band didn't go on until 10, and they were not very good. Or, less kindly but more honestly, they were very not good. The second band, however, was Kinch, and they were lots of fun. Though my first reaction when they hit the stage, due to the singers glasses, was "and after the war, Harry started a band."

Finally at just about midnight, Dear went on. And yeah, it was worth the wait and they were fun and high energy and I remembered why I've now drug myself out twice to see them specifically (which may actually make them the band I've seen the most this year... it's been a weird year). But it was also midnight at the start and nearly one at the finish. So I was very tired when they were done, and we didn't stick around to see if there was an encore type thing. Still, they are a band i like more live than on CD, and it was really great to get to see them again.

The four shows in five days thing was definitely a little too much for me if the way I was dragging all day yesterday (and still am today) is any indication.

*****

And now I get back to the utterly thrilling survey data entry. yay.
